Start up Apple Mail.
Click Preferences in the Mail menu.

Select Accounts.
(You may set the General settings as shown if you wish.)

At the bottom of the Accounts pane,
Click the plus sign to add an account.
In OS X 10.4 (Tiger) and OS X 10.5 (Leopard), setup is via a "wizard" that walks you through the steps.

Fill in the blanks using the information for your account.
Click Continue.

For the Account Type, select POP or IMAP.
IMAP is the newer, more flexible protocol and is recommended.
Select POP3 if you will always get your mail on this computer only.
You can read about IMAP and POP in the other FAQs.
Description is just for your reference. Important if you have lots of email accounts.
The mail server name for most domains hosted at SpeedSpan is mail.yourdomain.com - substitute the yourdomain.com part.
The Username is the full email address.

Apple Mail will try to connect to the server and is likely to show this dialog box.
Click "Connect".

Fill out the info for the Outgoing mail server like this, but using your domain name and Username.
Click "Continue".

Apple Mail will spend a long time connecting to the server and should eventually show a screen like this.
(Note that it connected using SSL, part of the delay.)
Leave the "Take account online" box checked, and click "Create".

Your new account will appear in the list at left along with any other accounts you've created.
Click on your new account name on the left, and then the "Advanced"tab near the top right.
The top two checkboxes should be checked as shown.
Suggest you un-check the box that says "Use SSL" unless you want to be very secretive.

With SSL not checked, the port number changes to 143 for IMAP. (For POP3 the port is 110.)

Now check the Mailbox Behaviors tab, which will show this for IMAP.

Usually you will want to keep most things on your local computer, so you can un-check those options.
In IMAP, Inbox messages stay on the server until you delete them or move them to a local folder. If you use IMAP,
it is wise to not leave more than a few hundred messages in the Inbox. Create local folders (e.g., "Family," "Friends," "Receipts," etc.) in Apple Mail, and after you deal with a message, move it from the Inbox to the appropriate local folder.
Close Preferences. You may be asked to verify changes, so do that.
Test your new account. You can start by sending an email to yourself.
