Need a Mailing List?

If you routinely mail a message to more than 20 people, mailing list software may be a big help. And if you want to reach 200 or 2000 people (a “mass mailing”), you definitely meed a mailing list. That capability is built right into Spanmail. You may see the word “dList” used here. The d stands for distribution - same idea. No charge for small mailings.

A mailing list has a number of advantages, and is pretty easy to start up.

Advantages

  • The distribution list is kept on the server.
  • The list is easily updated.
  • Malformed addresses are skipped.
  • Undeliverable addresses get removed.
  • Sending to the list is simple - same as ordinary email.
  • Messages are sent over time, efficiently.

That last one is important. You can't (and shouldn't) put a large number of addresses into an ordinary email. You (and SpeedSpan) might get tagged as a spammer if you send many messages at once, especially to the same place (e.g., AOL). The mailing list software knows how to time the deliveries.
